Lochranza is one of the best places on Arran to experience the island’s wildlife. In fact, all the photos and videos on this page were taken at Lochdean Cottage.

Known as “Scotland in miniature”, Arran is home to mountains, forests, beaches and moorland, creating the perfect habitat for wildlife. Around Lochranza you may spot red deer, red squirrels, seals, otters and even dolphins or porpoises in the bay.
Birdlife is everywhere too, from swans and sea birds to birds of prey soaring above the hills. In spring you can hear cuckoos in the surrounding woodland, while autumn brings the unforgettable sound of rutting stags echoing through the glen.
The beach is full of rock pools and sheltered coves to explore, and the island’s mild climate means you’ll also find beautiful woodland walks, colourful gardens and a surprising variety of plant life.
And of course, this is Arran, so don’t be surprised if you have to slow down for a few sheep on the road into the village!
